Travel Day 1

PDAnet for iPhone. It’s kinda weird – my notebook doesn’t get a real IP address – it gets a self-assigned address, but it’s connected to the iPhone using ad-hoc wireless. It’s not the most secure thing in the world; I’m using WEP, which is the best that ad-hoc networks can do at the moment. But at least it’s a net connection, and I don’t have to pay extra for it, and I won’t be forced to keep a browser window open the whole time. My flight leaves in 90 minutes, I’ll probably close up shop here in about 45. I’ve been awake since about 1:45 am, and am running on about 45-60 minutes of sleep. It was DAMN HOT last night, and I couldn’t sleep. Seriously! It was 70 degrees outside when I went to Denny’s at 3:30 am!!! I’m really looking forward to the cooler weather in Chicago. The expected temps while I’m there are ~60 during the day and ~40 at night. I should be pretty good while out there. These workstations aren’t the most comfortable in the world… I may just need to move earlier and just listen to music for a while. And speaking of music, I have both my iPod and my iPhone with me. I may pull some of the music off the iPhone and drop a movie or two on there. After all, I *do* have the iPod. 🙂 Anyway… I’m rambling. That’s all for now. More will be posted after I get to Chicago. Here’s hoping I end up getting some sort of sleep. Thanks for visiting and Keep Coming Back!!!]]>

  1. Your dad told me he called you to make sure you got up in time for your flight. I wondered where you were going so checked here and now I know. Clever of me, ey?
Too bad we aren’t in Kalamazoo yet – there is an extra bed and it is only 120 miles from Chicago and cheap on Amtrak. And I would like to show you around the town and also some “real” cooking – not that stuff your dad does.
But, we won’t be there for another two weeks at least. I’m watching the web cam in the Zoo and it is 45 – definitely not yet summer camp weather for us.
Have fun and stay in touch. You looking for work related possibilities there I suppose?

  2. Forgot: I downloaded the latest stable (8.10) of Kubuntu just a couple of days ago and put it on a stick. Not bad – I may have to go get the 9 now that you say it is so good.
BTW, do you know about “unetbootin”? A great utility for putting Linux on a stick, I’ve used it on three versions now and it works like a charm whereas the Live CD’s sometimes won’t do the job – PCLOS is one of those that seems to be flawed when it comes to installing on a USB.
I do have the PCLOS 2009 on one of my towers and like it very much. It does a good job on finding, and connecting, the wireless (Atheros) on my Toshiba where several of the others can’t/won’t.

  3. @Ol’ Dad
Yeah, I had a good time in the city proper yesterday. I’m going back into town tomorrow to go to the Museum of Science and Industry. It should be good. But now I go to bed… four hours late. 😉
